Margaret River Wine Region remains open and safe

The Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association (AMRTA) would like to inform the public and potential visitors that the majority of the Margaret River Wine Region remains open and safe for travel over this weekend and the following weeks.

AMRTA CEO Simon Ambrose expressed his condolences to those impacted by the natural disaster.

“Our priority in the immediate future is to provide support to the community and our members who have been affected by this disaster. Moving forward we would like to ensure that the greater community is reassured that the region is open and very willing to receive and host visitors. We are entering into our busiest season and the Margaret River Wine Region is ready to welcome you” said Mr Ambrose.

“We recognise that during the past two days visitors and school leavers in particular have been encouraged by government agencies not to travel to the Margaret River township. This was a necessary reaction due to the emergency situation and allowed the authorities to prioritise controlling the fire.

The Margaret River region in the south-west corner of Western Australia stretches 138km from Busselton in the north to Augusta in the south, fortunately only a small percentage of the region has been directly impacted by the bushfires.

Most of the region is still operating as normal, with many accommodation providers, wineries, attractions and shops open and unaffected.

Tourism WA CEO Stephanie Buckland said the agency was doing its best to make visitors aware that the vast majority of the greater Margaret River Wine Region is unaffected by the fire.

“We join the emergency authorities in encouraging people to stay away from the fire affected areas, but want to emphasise that most of the region’s extraordinary destinations and experiences are operating as normal” Ms Buckland said.

Australia’s South West CEO Sascha Papalia reiterated that the region is welcoming visitors.

“The Margaret River Wine Region stretches from Busselton to Augusta and luckily only a small area has been directly affected, the remainder of the area is open for business. The Margaret River Fire 2011 Appeal is now in effect and people can donate through the Lord Mayor Distress Relief Fund. For more information visit”.

Any visitors currently in or planning to travel to the region are encouraged to contact their respective accommodation providers for an update on the situation prior to cancelling any travel plans.
