Hobart, Tasmania’s capital lies in the south-east of the state, near the mouth of the Derwent River. Rising behind the city is 1,270 metre Mount Wellington, which is often snow-capped, sometimes even in summer.

Getting to Hobart
We recommend you book your flight to Hobart through Flight Centre as they provide an excellent range of flight options covering all the major domestic airlines, with direct flights from Sydney and Melbourne to Launceston and Hobart, and from Melbourne to Devonport, Burnie and King Island. Getting from the airport to Hobart city is easy for visitors to Hobart. The $10 Buck Bus runs to/from the Hobart Airport every day or take the Airporter Shuttle Bus for around $15 per person. If you are staying at hotels outside their normal run, they should be contacted on 0419 382 240. Or expect to pay $40 if you prefer a taxi for the 10km ride. If you are starting a driving holiday from Hobart airport, you can also hire a car from one of the car rental companies. If you prefer to holiday more slowly, the get tickets for the Spirit of Tasmania along with your own car.
Hobart tourist activities
One of the most popular tourist destinations in Hobart is Salamanca Place. Featuring magnificent beautiful sandstone warehouses on the harbour front, Salamanca Place is a prime example of Australian 1830s colonial architecture when the location was the centre of Hobart's trade and commerce. Many of the warehouses have now been transformed into galleries, restaurants, nightspots and shops selling everything from vegetables to antiques. Salamanca Place is perhaps most famous for its open-air market that is held every Saturday morning.
Another place not to miss is the historic Battery Point. Featuring excellent examples of early colonial architecture, including Arthur's Circle, perhaps the best preserved example of early 1800s cottages in Australia. Also nearby in a converted Georgian style home is Van Diemen's Land Folk Museum - well worth the visit.
